Current Events Discussion Topics

An on-line "Zoom" discussion is conducted every Monday morning at 9:30am Chicago time through the North Shore Senior Center hosted by Ron Mantegna. You can enroll in this discussion session at   https://www.nssc.org/

How close are we to assuring Iran won’t remain a nuclear risk?   A 60-day “memorandum of understanding” would extend the fragile ceasefire and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.  Iran would agree not to impose tolls on commercial ships trying to cross the key waterway, and remove all mines from the strait. The U.S. would lift its naval blockade and issue some sanctions waivers so Iran could freely sell its oil. The U.S. would also commit to discussing broader sanctions relief.

 

Is “Winning” more important today than “Integrity”? Consider Paxton and Platner.

 

Why should possible illegal “lawfare” be addressed by Executive Action instead of our Rule of Law, Due Process, and Constitution? A $1.776B “Anti-Weaponization Fund” was negotiated by Trump with his Justice Department as settlement over his IRS lawsuit. The fund will compensate those who claim they were “wrongly targeted” by the Biden administration, including J6 felons.

 

Is America pushing Cuba to be more of a failed state? How might taking over a failed state be in the best interests of working-class Americans? And what’s the benefit of indicting Castro?

 

How should we address America’s failing Education? Does this issue directly affect Democracy? High school seniors’ reading scores in 2024 were the lowest recorded since 1992. Math scores for 12th graders hit their lowest level since 2005. Concerns include ability to:

·       evaluate information critically

·       understand public policy

·       distinguish evidence from misinformation

·       participate in voting and civic institutions

·       communicate across disagreement

How does Trump’s relentless Retribution Campaign help working class Americans? Justice Department is investigating Trump accuser E. Jean Carroll for potential perjury in litigation against the president, whom she accused of sexual assault and defamation.

 

Should this activity be treated as “Corruption” more than “Insider Trading? The issue: If I buy a stock, and then have the power to affect a major change that dramatically increases that stock’s value? A related issue: is it OK to allow bets on ANYTHING?  Folks who never worked on a trading floor are moving markets with informed wagers. Some are getting rich.

 

What’s the most appropriate way we should be celebrating America’s 250th Birthday? How might our politics be affected if the President makes America’s celebration mostly about him?

 

Your thoughts about Pope Leo’s concerns with A.I.  Pope Leo added his moral point of view to a growing backlash against the impact of artificial intelligence. He warns that artificial intelligence “threatens to normalize an anti-human vision” and said that the concentration of immense digital power in the hands of a few private actors must be countered. The risk, he said, is that humans will be reduced “to mere cogs in a system driven toward ever greater efficiency”.

What is the Benefit and Risk of blocking international flights into major Sanctuary Cities? The Trump administration is "drawing up plans" blocks such flights according to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin. Cities with major international airports including Boston, Denver, Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Newark, Seattle ​and San Francisco.

 

Is Trump essentially governing as President of the Republican Party, less concerned with any negative views of other voters, even given his 38% Approval? How does this affect the GOP?

 

Are UFO’s “real”? Do you believe there is Intelligent Life outside Earth? What are the chances other Life could be so different we’d never know they were here? What if the difference in intelligence between Us and Them is similar to the difference between Humans and a Cow? (And we eat cows.)

Is the Administration attacking Freedom of Speech? ABC accused the FCC of violating its free speech rights by investigating “The View” just because the program discusses political views the Administration doesn’t like. What about attacks on Late Night Hosts like Colbert and Kimmel?

 

How healthy are we with RFK Jr? Officials at the Food & Drug Administration blocked publication of several studies supporting the safety of widely used vaccines against Covid-19 and shingles.

 

The color of money is now gray. What are the ramifications of Seniors holding more wealth? In 1989, Americans over age 55 held 56% of the wealth. Today it’s 74%. Wealth for under 40 has shrunk from 12 to 6.6%. 18% of Americans are Senior citizens, up from 13% in 1990.

 

Is the issue of Women’s Rights back on the ballot? The Supreme Court temporarily restored access to the teleprescribing and mailing of abortion drugs, which now account for more than 60% of all abortions in the health system. How might this issue affect the November Election?

 

Is Musk’s idea plausible? “Universal HIGH INCOME via checks issued by the Federal government is the best way to deal with unemployment caused by AI. AI/robotics will produce goods & services far in excess of the increase in the money supply, so there will not be inflation.”  Concerns: It doesn’t address sense of purpose. People go to work every day feeling they matter.

 

Is eliminating all standards for greenhouse gas emissions in our best interests? How smart is it to totally disregard the concerns of scientists vs. moderating how standards apply?
